What is a patch?
Flat lesion that is >1cm.
What is a papule?
Raised lesion that is <1 cm. If you run your finger over the lesion and you can feel it, it is raised.
Examples: basal cell carcinoma, skin tags, molluscum contagiosum, guttate psoriasis.
What is a plaque?
Raised, large lesion >1 cm
Examples: plaque psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, herald patch of pityriasis rosea, ptyriasis rosea, nummular dermatitis
What is a vesicle?
Raised, fluid-filled, small <1 cm lesion.
Examples: herpes simplex virus, herpes zoster (shingles), allergic contact dermatitis
What is a bulla?
Large, fluid-filled >1 cm
Example: Bullous fixed drug eruption, insect bites, inherited skin fragility disorder
What is a pustule?
Small palpable collection of neutrophils or keratin that appear white.
Example: acne vulgaris, bacterial folliculitis
What is a furuncle?
Inflamed hair follicle
What is a nodule?
Larger and deeper than a papule.
What is a subcutaneous mass/cyst?
Encapsulated collection of fluid or semisolid.
What is a wheal?
Area of localized dermal edema that comes and goes within a period of 1-2 days, essential primary lesion of urticaria.
What is a burrow?
Small linear or serpiginous pathways in the epidermis created by a scabies bite.
What questions should be included in HPI for skin concerns?
Changes, exposure to allergens, new medications, sexual history
Noticed any new growths or rashes?
Changes in your skin?
Rashes, sores, lumps, itching
Type, location, date
What is atopic dermatitis?
itchy, swollen, red, cracked skin, clear fluid may be present
Eczema
What is tines capitis?
Disease caused by superficial fungal infection of the skin of the scalp, eyebrows, eyelashes
