Tips for assessing joint pain
point to where the pain is
when did the pain start: injury etc
localized or diffuse
acute or chronic
inflammatory or noninflammatory
Examination
joint symmetry
alignment
boby deformities
swelling
surrounding tissues for skin changes, nodules, or atrophy
ROM
swelling, warmth tenderness, redness
How to access the mandible?
as patient opens mouth, place tips of your fingers in front of the trigs of ear. ask the patient to open and close, protrusion and retraction
assess masseters and temporal muscles
note any swelling, tenderness, crepitus and smooth ROM
Bony structures of the shoulder?
humerus, the clavicle and the scapula.
Joints of the shoulder?
the glenohumeral joint, the sternoclavicular joint and the acromioclavicular joint.
Muscles of the shoulder; scapulohumoral group?
scapulohumoral group includes the important SITS muscles, or the rotator cuff; supraspinatus, infraspinatus and teres minor and subscapularis muscles.
Shoulder muscle group: axioscapular?
The axioscapular group includes the trapezius, rhomboids, serratus anterior and levator scapulae muscles.
The axiohumoral group includes
the pectoralis major and minor in the latissimus dorsi muscles.
Assessing the shoulders?
inspect: anterior and posterior muscles
palpate at joint and clavicle for tenderness
ROM: flexion
extension
abduction
aduction
internal rotation
external rotation
