Skin Cancer Flashcards
UVB
Carcinogenic
Causes sunburn
Blocked by glass
Photons absorbed directed by DNA
UVA
Carcinogenic
Also involved in tanning and wrinkling
Indirect DNA damage through oxidization
2 types of melanin
Eumelanin (brown-black)
Phaeomelanin (red)
Basal cell carcinoma
Most common
Locally destructive but not usually metastatic
Translucent, telangectasia, papular, can be ulcerated or eroded
4 variants of BCC
Superficial spreading
Nodular
Sclerosing
Pigmented
Freckles (ephelids)
Secondary to sun damage
Not precancerous
Fade/get stronger depending on sun exposure
Seborrheic keratosis
Some texture to it
“stuck on appearance”
Very common
Not precancer
Nevi (moles)
Proliferations of abnormal melanocytes
Most acquired ones are secondary to sun damage
ABCDEs of melanoma
Asymmetry Border irregularity Colour variation Diameter (> 6 mm) Enlarging or evolving
Superficial spreading melanoma
Often from atypical nevi
Most common type
Irregular edge, colour variation, quite flat until late, often large
Nodular melanoma
No precursor lesion
Usually a black nodule
Lentigo maligna melanoma
From lentigo maligna
Often on the face
Very slowly progressive as a large flat patch, then a nodule occurs
