Skin Flashcards
What is the function of the skin?
Protection, Sensation, movement and growth, excretion, immunity and temperature control
What does the skin protect the body from?
Micro organisms, dehydration, UV radiation and mechanical trauma
What is the sensation of the skin?
What you feel for example hot, cold, pain, touch and pressure
What is the first line of defence of the skin?
The epidermis
What is the epidermis made of?
Epithelial tissue
How many layers does the Epidermis have?
Five
What protein does the epidermis make?
Epidermal growth factor (EGF)
The epidermis does not contain?
Nerves or glands
Is the epidermis avascular in vascular?
Avascular
What layer is at the bottom of the epidermis?
Stratum basale (base layer)
What is the spiny layer?
Stratum spinosum
Granular layer?
Stratum Granulosum
Clear layer?
Stratum Lacidum
What is the top layer of the epidermis?
Stratum corneum
What layer in the epidermis does mitosis happen?
Stratum basale
What layer does the dead cells shed through the skin?
Stratum corneum
How many cells are in the epidermis?
Four
What are the four cells in the epidermis?
Keratinocytes Keratin, Melanocytes Melanin, Dendritic and Merkel
What is the role of Keratinocytes?
Consists of protein which gives the skin its toughness
What is the role of melanocytes?
Gives our skin pigmentation and shields the skin from UV radiation
What is the role of the Dendritic?
Part of the immune system and begins life in the bone marrow and migrates to the skin
What is the role of the Merkel?
Connects the nerve endings and form touch receptors
When is the Dermoepidermal Junction?
Between the dermis and the epidermis
How does the dermoepidermal junction cause blisters?
The blister is form when the two layers seperate and allows fluid between
What are the two layers of the dermis?
Papillary layer and Reticular layer
What is the cell found in the dermis?
Fibroblasts
What happens to fibroblasts as we age?
Our body produces less
