Drugs- clindamycin (cleocin), erythromycin, minocycline, doxycycline
Uses- moderate to severe acne
Foam/gel/lotion/oral
DC once lesions clear, and continue maintenance therapy like retinoids/benzoyl peroxide
Azelaic acid (azalex)
Uses- acne, rosacea
MOA- antibiotic activity against c. Acne, inhibit protein synthesis, antiinflammatory
Can cause lightening to skin
Cream/gel
ADE- mild, transient itching, burning, stinging, tingling
Benzoyl peroxide
Uses- acne 1st line for mild to moderate
MOA- bacterialcidal for c. Acnes, reduced inflammation, comedolytic activity
Topical/washes/foams/cream/gel
ADE- dry skin, irritation, bleaching of cloth, contact dermatitis
Dapsone (aczone)
Uses- acne
MOA- anti inflammatory, anti bacterial, interfere with neutrophilic function and tumor necrosis factor alpha

ADE- oiliness, dryness, erythema
Bacitracin
Uses-acne
Class- Peptide antibiotic
Often used in combo with neomycin/polymyxin to prevent infection of wounds

MOA- interferes with protein synthesis, for gram - organisms
Often used in combo with cream/ointment
Mupirocin
Uses- acne, prevention of NI in hospital, impetigo, MRSA
MOA- inhibit protein synthesis for gram + organism

ADE- itching, skin rash, burning
Neomycin
uses-acne
MOA- interferes with bacterial protein synthesis: gram - bacteria, some gram +
Often in combo with bacitracin or polymyxin ointment
ADE- contact dermatitis, erythema, rash, itching, hives
Ozenxacin
MOA- quinolone, inhibits DNA replication, kills staph and strep, MRSA
Uses- impetigo in those 2 months or older
ADE- itching, redness, dryness
Polymyxin
Class- cyclic hydrophobic peptide
MOA- disrupts bacterial cell wall in gram - organism
Used in combo with bacitracin, neomycin
Uses- prevent skin infection
Retapamulin (altabax)
MOA protein synthesis inhibitor for gram + bacteria
Uses- impetigo
Ointment
ADE- itching, irritation
Retinoids
Drugs- tazarotene (tazorac), trentinoin (rentin A), adalapene (differin)
Uses- acne, psoriasis, severe rosacea
MOA- vitamin A derivative that interacts with retinoid receptors to regulate gene expression to normalize retinocyte differentiation, proliferation, and reduce sebum production, anti inflammatory
ADE- erythema. Peeling, burning, stinging, dry MM. photosensitive
Avoid in pregnancy especially topical
Isotrentinoin (accutane) category X
Salicylic acid
MOA- penetrates pilosebaceous units and works as exfoliant anti inflammatory
Uses- mild acne
OTC facial washes/pads
ADE- skin peeling, dryness, local irritation
Sulfacetimide sodium
MOA - interferes with bacterial growth in combo with sulfur
Uses- inflammatory acne lesions
Cleanser/cream/foam/gel/lotion/pads/suspension/wash
ADE- contact dermatitis, erythema, itching, dryness
Actinic keratosis
Dry scaly lesions occurring on sun exposed areas precursor to SCC
Therapies- efudex (5flourouracil), aldara (lmiquimod), cryotherapy, currttage,
Atopic dermatitis
Treated with emollients and topical steroids and maybe immune modulators
