Skill Aquisition Flashcards
What is the first stage of skill learning?
Cognitive stage (beginner stage)
What is the second stage of skill learning?
Associative stage (or practice stage)
What is the third and last stage of skill learning?
Autonomous stage (or automatic stage)
What is the cognitive stage?
The cognitive stage is the first stage of learning. It’s when you learn the basic movement patterns of the skill.
What can help you learn during the cognitive stage?
During this stage, it can be helpful to ‘close down the skill’ to allow the learner to focus on the key points of skill execution.
How do you ‘close down the skill’?
To do this, someone can demonstrate the skill so that the learner can visualize it, then have them practice it. After they practice, point out their errors/what they can improve on.
What is the associative stage?
Learners start to understand the movement and the skill better and produce less errors. It is good to give feedback and demonstrations during this stage.
What is the autonomous stage?
During this stage, the learner should be able to complete this skill without conscious control. (Be able to do it sub-consciously)
At what stage of learning are a large number of mistakes expected?
Cognitive stage.
