SkelRad A Final Flashcards
Clinical Findings of Osteomalacia
general muscle weakness
bone pain upon palpation
deformities in weight bearing bones
Radiographic findings of Osteomalacia
decreased bone density mottled trabecular pattern loss of cortical definition- thinner pseudo-fractures (insufficiency fracture) deformities
Pseudo-fractures
aka looser lines, milkman’s syndrome, Umbau Zones
bilateral, symmetrical, chronic
Most common sites of pseudo-fractures
Femoral Neck
Pubic and Ischial rami
ribs
axillary border of scapulae
Deformities seen with osteomalacia
in weight bearing bones
protrusio-acetabuli
bowing of the femur or tibia
kyphoscoliosis
Rickets
Childhood equivalent of osteomalacia in an adult
6-12 months of age
due to a deficiency of Vitamin D, calcium, phosphorous, or sunlight
Clinical Findings of Rickets
muscle tetany bone pain irritability weakness delayed development small stature bone deformities
soft tissue swelling around growth plates is associated with:
Rickets
secondary to hypertrophied cartilage
“rachitic rosary” costochondral bumps on the anterior rib cage
Growth Plate changes seen with Rickets
cartilage cells grow normally, but fail to calcify
resulting in a generalized lucency due to the increase in uncalcified osteoid
healed when an opaque metaphyseal line is visualized
