Skeleton And Muscular System Flashcards
How many bones in the body
Adult 206
Children more than 206
Cartilage
Acts as a shock absorber , allow limited movement and stops bones rubbing off each other.
Joint
Two bones meet
Fused joint
Do not allow bones to move e.g skull
Synovial joints
Allow bones to move
- Hinge joint
- Ball and socket.
Ball and socket joint
Allows movement in several directions
E.g hip and shoulder.
Hinge joints
Allows movement in one plane only
E.g knee,elbow,jaw and knuckles
Synovial fluid
Acts as a shock absorber allowing bones to move and prevent friction
Ligament
Tough, elastic fibres hold the bones together
Tendons
Connect muscles to bone
Antagonistic pairs
Muscles can only contract(get shorter)
-they can only pull bones.
The biceps contracts to pull up the lower arm. The triceps contracts to pull the arm down
Functions of the skeleton
To support the body, to allow movement, to protect vital organs.
Nervous system
Brain,spinal cord,all the nerves
Sensory system
Sends a message to the brain from the sense organ
Motor nerve
Sends a message from the brain to a muscle
