Skeleton and Bones Flashcards
what are the names given to the 2 parts of the skeleton
axial skeleton and appendicular skeleton
what bones does the axial skeleton contain
bones of skull, neck and trunk
what bones does the appendicular skeleton contain
bones of pectoral girdle, upper limbs, pelvic girdle and lower limbs
name the 3 long bones in the upper limb
humerus, radius and ulna
name the 3 groups of bones in the hand
carpal bones (wrist), metacarpals(palm) and phalanges(fingers)
name the 3 long bones of the lower limb
femur, tibia and fibula
name the 3 groups of bones in the foot
tarsal bones(hindfoot/midfoot)
metatarsals(forefoot)
phalanges(forefoot/toes)
define the term bony feature
a feature of a bone developed during bone growth that gives it the best shape for its function
describe the 2 ways that a bony feature is developed
an adjacent structure (eg tendon, blood vessel) applies a force to it, molding the shape of the bone
OR
an adjacent structure develops at the same tiem as the bone and the bone has to grow around it, forming a foramen(hole)
what are the properties and functions of bone
it is a hard connective tissue
functions, support&protect organs, calcium metabolism, RBC formation, attachment for skeletal muscles
what are the properties and functions of cartilage
it is less rigid than bone and is located at articulations(joints)
give 2 examples of bony features
styloid process of radius tibial tuberosity(elevation)
