skeleton Flashcards
functions of the skeleton
support, movement, protection, storage (minerals, calcium used for function) Red blood cell formation.
two types of bones
compact and cancellous/spongy, both are made up of the same material but it is arranged diff and found in diff porportions.
compact
found where strength and load bearing needed “middle long bit of a bone”
cancellous/spongy
found where shock absorption required. “top bulky bit of bone”
Long bone
longer than they are wide. extremities or epiphyses "ends are different shapes" shaft or disphysis "elongation". function as levers for movement "limbs". thicker compact bone in disphysis.
short bones
near equal in width and length eg carpal bones “hands”.
weight bearing.
most cancellous bone.
flat bones
protection-cranial bones.
muscle attachment-scapula.
thin plates of compact bone-some cancellous
irregular bones
variable shape and function
Axial skeleton “division of the skeleton
is the central core of the body, everything else moves around it. protection.
axial skeleton
skull-cranium (vault)-facial bones
vertebral column-cervical (7)- thoracic (12)-lumbar (5)-sacrum and coccyx
rob cage-ribs, sternum.
appendicular skeleton “division of the skeleton”
limbs, regions, arm “humeriuos”, forearm, forearm, thigh “femer”, leg”knee and ankle”
