Skeleton Flashcards
What are the 5 functions of the skeleton ?
- movement
- protection
- store for minerals
- supply of blood cells
- support - organs and tissues
What movements can the skeleton produce ?
- flexion
- extension
- abduction
- aduction
- rotation
- circumduction
- hyperextension
How many vertebrae are in the vertebral column ?
34 divided in 5 sections •cervical(7) •thoracic(12) •lumbar(5) biggest , provide most movement •sacrum(5 fused) bottom of the spine •coccyx(5 fused)
The ribs have how many pains ?
12 pains
- all joined to the back of the vertebrae
- most joined to the sternum at the front
What are the 2 bottoms pains of ribs known as?
“Floating ribs” as they are only joined at the back of the vertebrae and not at the front of the sternum
What does the axial skeleton consist of ?
Skull
Spine
Rib cage
What does the appendicular skeleton consist of ?
Shoulder girdle -clavicles, scapula and humerus Arm Wrist Leg Hand Foot
What is the origin?
Point of attachment of a muscle that remains relatively fixed during muscular contraction
What is insertion?
Point of attachment of a muscle that tends to move toward the origin during muscular contraction
What is the agonist ?
As the muscle that is directly responsible for the movement of the joint
What is the antagonist ?
The muscle that has an action opposite to that of the agonist that helps in the production of a co-ordinated movement
What is the fixator ?
The ability of your trunk to support the forces from your arms and legs during different types of physical activity. Allows joints and muscles to work in their safest and most efficient positions, therefore reducing the risk of injury
What is the antagonist muscle action ?
As one muscle shortens to produce movement, another lengthens to allow that movement to take place
