Skeleton Flashcards
What is the axial skeleton made of?
Skull, Vertebral Column, Ribs and Sternum
What is the appendicular skeleton made of?
Bones of upper/lower limbs
Limb girdles
Cranium bones
8 bones (1 Frontal, 1 occipital, 1 sphenoid, 1 ethmoid, 2 parietal, and 2 temporal)
Where is the vomer located?
The posterior portion of the nasal region
What is the most common fracture location?
The surgical neck of the humerous that damages the axillary nerve
Mid shaft fractures may damage what?
The radial nerve, which traverses the lateral aspect of the humerus closely associated with the radial groove
What nerve is vulnerable to damage in the supracondylar area?
The median nerve
What nerve is vulnerable near the medial epicondyle, around which it curves to enter the forearm?
The ulnar nerve
What is the scaphoid bone?
The carpal bone on the radial side, forms the radial border of the carpal tunnel
What does the scaphoid bone articulate with?
The radius, lunate, trapezoid, trapezium and capitate. The scaphoid can be palpated at the base of the anatomical snuff box
What is the most common of the carpal bone injuries?
Fractures of the scaphoid due to its connections with the two rows of carpal bones
What is a boxer’s fracture?
A fracture of the fourth and/or fifth metapcarpal bones transverse neck secondary to an indirect force such as striking an object with a closed fist due to axial loading
What is a femoral fracture?
A femoral fracture that involves the femoral head, femoral neck or the shaft of the femur immediately below the lesser trochanter which can be classified as a hip fracture, especially associated with osteoporosis
How does one usually get a calcaneal fracture?
Usually caused by a fall from height when one lands on his or her feet. Represent approx. 2% of all fractures but 60% of tarsal bone fractures
What is the total number of bones in the body?
206
