Where is the axial skeleton? what bones make this up?
Axial skeleton- central axis of the body,
Made up of cranium, vertebral column, rib cage, sternum and sacrum
axial skeleton role?(2)
attachment site for upper and lower limbs
protection of the most vital and vulnerable organs such as the brain and spinal cord
What makes up the appendicular skeleton ?
Appendicular skeleton- upper and lower limbs pelvic and shoulder girdle
What’s the appendicular skeletons main role?
movement and function
Long bone eg?
femur, phalanges, humerus
short bone example?
Square in shape, tails
Flat bones eg?
sternum, ribs, Scapula, illium, ischium ,pubis, skull
irregular bone eg?
vertebrae, coccyx
What is the extremities epiphysis of the long bone?
epiphysis- the end part of a long bone initially growing separately to shaft
What is the epiphysis filled with?
spongy cancellous bone
What is the shape of the epiphysis?
Expanded for articulation and surface area for attachments
What occurs in the centre of the epiphysis?
ossification during development
Shape of shaft/diaphysis?
long & cylindrical
What is filled with marrow?
medullary cavity
What is articular cartilage?
Where does ossification occur in a foetus?
Articular cartilage= covers epiphyses composed of hyaline cartilage
