Skeletal systems Flashcards

Functions, bone classes, axial skeleton, appendicular skeleton, major bones,

1
Q

functions of the skeletal systems: support

A

this helps us stand upright, and allows the bones to take most of the weight and lets the squishy tissues have something to hold onto

Q

functions of the skeletal systems: movement

A

Our bones act as levers, they allows us to move around without melting into the floor
our muscles pull on the bones for movement to occur

Q

functions of the skeletal systems: protection

A

Our bones protect our major organs
i.e.
skull protects our brain
ribcage protects our heart and lungs
our vertebrate protects our spinal cord

Q

functions of the skeletal systems: storage

A

Our bone store different minerals and these therefore make them stronger
i.e. calcium and red blood cells

Q

functions of the skeletal systems: red blood cell formation

A

The red marrow is found within the center of the bones in the medullary cavity
when younger = more red blood cells
when older = more yellow and fattier

Q

medullary cavity

A

This is a cavity in the center of the bone that holds minerals and red blood cells/red marrow

Q

Axial skeleton: what are the divisions used for?

A

the divisions are used for protection of vital organs

Axial skeleton: Parts of the skull

A

The cranium, facial bones, joins at sutures

Q

Axial skeleton: Cranium

A

The cranium (vault) encloses the brain and allows for the jaw and neck muscles to have something to attach to

Q

Axial skeleton: facial bones

A

Our facial bones protect our sensory organs
i.e. eyes (optic nerve), ears, nose, tongue

Q

Axial skeleton: join at sutures

A

These are immovable joints

Q

Axial skeleton: The vertebral column

A

this keeps the trunk upright, there are lots of muscle and ligament attachments and also supports our head

14
Q

Axial skeleton: the vertebral column divisions

A

cervical (7): 7am breakfast
- supports the head and enables movement
thoracic (12): 12pm lunch
- is in the middle and makes up most of your back
lumbar (5): 5pm dinner
- takes all the weight of the body
sacrum and coccyx
- fused vertebrate

Q

Axial skeleton: the vertebral column extras

A

rib cage (thoracic cage): 12 each side
- protects our heart and lungs
- 2 ribs at the bottom are just floating (each side)
sternum (breastbone)
- mainly protects our heart/front of chest

16
Q

Appendicular skeleton: limb bones

A

femur
humorous
tibia, fibula
ulna, radius

These are most important for movement

17
Q

Appendicular skeleton: regions

A

Arm: proximal part of upper limb
forearm: distal part of upper limb
thigh: proximal part of lower limb
leg: distal part of lower limb
