Homeostasis
All systems are stable (i.e. in an equilibrium state)
Anatomical position
Facing forward
upright
feet together
palms facing forwrd
Anterior
Closer to the front of the body
Posterior
Closer to the back of the body
Inferior
Closer to the feet
Superior
Closer to the head
Medial
Towards the mid line of the body
Lateral
Further away from the mid line of the body
Proximal
Closer to the trunk of the body
(Only for limbs)
Distal
Further away from the trunk of the body
(Only for limbs)
Deep
Closer to the bone, further away from the surface
Superficial
Closer to the surface, further away from the bone
Flexion
Decreasing the angle between body parts
(flexing at the gym)
Extension
Increasing the angle between body parts
(elongating the limbs)
Dorsiflexion
Flexing your feet
(only in foot)
Plantarflexion
Pointing your toes, like ballet class
(only in foot)
Abduction
Moving the limb away from the mid line
(being abducted)
Adduction
Bringing the limb back towards the mid line
(being added back to the body)
Inversion
Pushing the sole of the foot towards the mid line
(Sickled foot)
Eversion
Pushing the sole of the foot away from the mid line
(duck/penguin/fish feet)
Circumduction
Circular movement of a limb
This is a combo movement of:
- flexion
- extension
- abduction
- adduction
Rotation
Pivot around the axis of a bone
i.e. rotate your shoulder side to side
Pronation
Palms facing backwards
i.e. pushing away from body
Supination
Palms facing forwards
i.e. holding soup
