Skeletal System Vocab Flashcards
bone
any of the 206 individual parts of the skeleton composed of cells and inorganic, mineral matrix; also a connective tissue and type of cell.
cartilage
type of connective tissue in which cells are in lacunae separated by semisolid extracellular matrix.
hematopoiesis
production of blood cells from dividing stem and progenitor cells; hemopoiesis
marrow
connective tissue within spaces in bones that includes blood-forming stem cells.
sesamoid bone
any of the round bones that form with in tendons adjacent to joints
articulation
the union of two or more bones; a joint
compact bone
dense bone tissue in which cells are organized in osteons without apparent spaces; cartical bone
diaphysis
shaft of long bone
epiphysis
either end of a long bone
epiphyseal plates (growth plate)
cartilaginous layers between the epiphyses and diaphysis of a long bone that grow, lengthening the bone
lamella
layer of matrix surrounding the central canal of an osteon
osteoblast
bone-forming cell
osteoclast
cell that breaks down bone matrix
osteon
cylinder-shaped unit containing bone cells and matrix lamellae that surround a central canal; Haversian system
ossification
formation of bone tissue
