Skeletal System pt1 Flashcards
Bone
is what comprises the human body of the internal framework. at birth the skeletal system is comprised of approximately 270 bones, slimming down to 206 by adulthood
Cartilage
an important
ligament
a short band of tough flexible fibrous connective tissue that connects two bones or cartilages or holds together a joint. (connects bone to bone)
tendon
a flexible but inelastic cord of strong fibrous collagen tissue attaching muscle to bone
Axial Skeleton
The axial skeleton includes the bones that form the skull, laryngeal skeleton, vertebral column and thoracic cage. This is what protects the core of the body. Consists of 80 bones.
Appendicular Skeleton
The appendicular skeleton includes the bones of the shoulder griddle, the upper limbs, the pelvic girdle, and the lower limbs
Long Bone
long bones are hard dense bones that provide strength, structure and mobility consisting of a shaft and two ends
Short bone
a short bone is one that is cube-like in shape, being approximately equal in length width and thickness. The only short bones in the human skeleton are in the carpals of the wrists and the tarsals of the ankle. short bones provide stability and support as well as some limited motion
flat bone
irregular bone
