Skeletal System pt 2 Flashcards
fibrous joints
joints in which bones are connected by fibrous tissues which do not allow any movement between bones
Ligaments
A short band of tough flexible fibrous connective tissue which connects two bones or cartilages or holds together a joint
Saddle joint
type of synovial joint in which the opposing surfaces are concave and convex
Gliding joint
synovial joint formed between bones that meet at flat or nearly articular surfaces
cartilaginous joints
type of joints where the bones are entirely joined by cartilage
menisci
piece of cartilage found where two bones meet that protect and cushion the joint surface and bone ends
Ball and socket joint
type of synovial joint in which the ball shaped service of one rounded bone fits into the cup like depression of another bone
condyloid joint
only allows for forward backward and side to side movement and do not allow rotation
Synovial joints
allow for movement
bursae
Closed fluid filled sack that works as a cushion and gliding surface to reduce friction between tissues of the body
pivot joint
freely movable joint that allows only rotary movement around a single axis
osteoporosis
causes bones to become weak and brittle
Synovial fluid
thick liquid located between your joints
Bursitis
painful condition that affects the small food fill sacks which causes the bursae to become inflamed
Hinge joint
type of joint allowing bones to move in one direction back-and-forth with limited motion along other planes
