Skeletal system and bones Flashcards
What does the skeletal system consist of
Bones
Cartilage
Tendons
Ligaments
The role of the skeletal system in the body
Support
Protection
Movement
Mineral and growth factor storage
Blood cell formation
Fat storage
The composition of bones and nutrients and activities required for their optimum health
Protein, collagen, and minerals, especially calcium
Basic bone anatomy, and the difference between compact and spongy bone and their roles
Compact bone - dense outer layer. Provide strength and protection to bones
Spongy bone - honeycomb of trabeculae.
To house the bone marrow, allow for RBCs formation or erythropoiesis, and allow bones to be less dense and more light.
Cells of the bones
osteoblasts,
osteocytes,
osteoclasts
bone lining cells
Ossification of the bones
The process of bone formation
Types of cartilage and roles
hyaline, fibrous, and elastic cartilage
Bone metabolism (Hormones, nutrients, triggers etc)
