SKELETAL SYSTEM ANATOMY Flashcards
name the bones of the skull and their anatomical features;
describe the general features of the vertebral column
typical vertebra
describe the special features of vertebrae in different regions of the vertebral column
describe the anatomy of the sternum and ribs and how the ribs articulate with the thoracic vertebrae.
Sternum: made of manubrium, body, and xiphoid process. Most ribs attach directly or indirectly to sternum.
Ribs: each rib has a head for articulation with costal facet of thoracic vertebral body. Head tapers to neck, where tubercule articulates with costal facet of thoracic vertebra’s transverse process. Anteriorly, ribs terminate in costal cartilage that spans gap to sternum.
True ribs: ribs 1-7 articulate directly (via their own costal cartilage) with the sternum
False ribs: ribs 8-12 do not directly attach to the sternum, some connect to other costal cartilages, while others do not connect at all. Latter referred to as floating ribs (ribs 11 and 12)

identify and describe the features of the pelvic girdle, femur, patella, tibia, fibula, and bones of the foot
pelvic girble- consist of a coplete ring composed of three bones
femur- longest and strongest bone of the body
patella- is roughly triangular sesamoid bone
fibula- is a slender lateral strut that helps stablize the ankle
foot- are arranged proximas and distal
