Skeletal System Flashcards
Skeletal system makes up the framework of the human body. It is responsible for providing shape and support, protecting internal organs, and serving as a storage place for mineral salts, calcium, and phosphorus. It plays an important role in the formation of blood cells and in providing an area for the attachment of skeletal muscles. What are the 2 divisions that compose the skeletal system and how many bones are in each?
The 206 bones are divided into: the Axial skeleton (80 bones), and the Appendicular skeleton (126 bones)

6 main functions of bone:
- Provide shape, support, And the framework of the body
- Protection for the body’s internal organs
- Serving as a storage place for mineral salts, calcium, and phosphorus
- Playing an important role in the formation of blood cells (hemopoiesis/hematopoiesis), takes place in the bone marrow
- Providing an area for the attachment of skeletal muscle
- Helping to make movement possible through articulation

Joint is called an _____, Is located at the place where two bones connect. Joints are classified according to the type of movement they provide. What are 3 types of joints? What do each do?
—An articulation
- Synarthrotic joint: Produces no movement. Exp cranial suture
- Amphiarthrotic joint: Permits very slight movement. Exp vertebrae
- Di-arthrotic joint: Allows for free movement in a variety of directions. Exp elbow, wrist, hip, and knee. Allows for several types of body movements.
