Q

What is ossification?

A

Ossification is the constant activity of osteoblasts and osteoclasts in addition with minerals and salts to form bones.

Q

Explain the process of ossification!

A

The minerals from the blood get deposited into the bones through the osteoblasts, in contrast, the osteoclasts occupy little depressions on the bone surface created by enzymes. They dissolve collagen and minerals which get released back into the bloodstream.
Calcium compounds are required for ossification to take place. The lengthening of the bone is achieved by the expansion of the epiphyseal plates on both ends of the diaphysis. As these plates expand, new cells can form and increase the shaft of the bone on both ends. This process finishes when the epiphyseal plates decrease in thickness.
The main mineral involved is calcium compounds and ossification normally takes place between the ages of 18-30 years old.
