Skeletal System Flashcards
1
Q
Functions of the skeletal system
A
Protection
Support
Production of blood cells
Movement
2
Q
Protection
A
Bone is rigid and tough so it can protect delicate organs
3
Q
Support
A
- provides a rigid frame
* soft tissues are supported which allows us to stand up
4
Q
Production of blood cells
A
- many bones have soft tissue called bone marrow in the middle of them
- bone marrow produces red blood cells (which carry oxygen around the body) and white blood cells (which help the immune system and protect the body from infection)
5
Q
Movement
A
- muscles are attached to bones with tendons
- the action of muscles allows the skeleton to move
- joints also allow the skeleton to move
