Skeletal system Flashcards
How are skeletal muscles controlled?
Skeletal muscles are ultimately controlled by muscles pulling on bones
What is the epiphyseal plate?
Growth plate
As the cartilage grows wider the outside cells otasify or harden which increases bone length.
What are the 5 features of synovial joints?
- Hyaline cartilage
- Joint capsule
- Synovial membrane
- Synovial fluid
- Ligaments
What are the 2 types of bone tissue?
Compact - strong, heavy
Cancellous - honey comb like, light weight
What are the 5 parts of the spine IN ORDER?
- Cervical vertebra
- Thoracic vertebra
- Lumbar vertbra
- Sacrum
- Cocyx
What are the 2 parts of the skeleton and what do they include?
AXIAL - MIDDLE - Skull - Vertebral column - Sternum - Ribs APPENDICULAR - COME OFF MIDDLE - Arms - Hands - Knee - Legs
What are irregular bones - give an exapmple
Reinforced where extra strength is needed
E.g spine/ vertebrate
What are flat bones - give an example
Allow for large muscle attachment
E.g scapula
What are short bones - give an example
Short and chuncky - allow movement
E.g Carpals
What are long bones - give an example
Longer then they are wider
E.g Humerous
What are 5 types of synovial joints - example of each
Gliding joint - Wrist, ankle Ball and socket joint - shoulder, hip Hinge joint - elbow, knee Pivot joint - neck Saddle joint - base of thumb
What are the 3 types of joints and how much movement occurs
FIBROUS - Immovable CARTILAGINOUS - Particially moveable SYNOVIAL - Move freely
What are the 5 functions of bones?
- Support
- Protection
- Movement
- Storage
- Red blood cell production
