Skeletal System Flashcards
Name the 6 functions of the skeletal system
-support -protection (for internal organs) -movement -mineral storage -storage of blood cell producing cells -storage of energy
Name the two divisions of the skeletal system and 4 examples from each division
Axial skeleton: ex. skull, sternum, ribs, vertebral column Appendicular skeleton: ex. upper extremities, lower extremities, shoulder girdle, pelvic girdle
Name and describe the types of bones
long bones: long, work as levers short bones: cube shaped, thin layer of compact bone with inner spongy bone flat bones: thin and usually curved, provide protection for organs irregular bones: do not fit in any other category. Shape usually has to do with specific function of bone sesamoid bones: embedded in tendons
Define joint
aka articulation, the place where 2 bones come together
Define fibrous joint
immovable joints that connect bones
Define cartilaginous joint
slightly movable joints. Bones are attached by cartilage, a little movement
Define synovial joint
freely movable joints, much more movement than cartilaginous joints. Cavities between bones are filled with synovial fluid, which helps lubricate and protect the bones
Name the 6 types of joints
-hinge: allows extension and retraction of an appendage (elbow, knee) -ball and socket: allows for radial movement in almost any direction (hip, shoulder) -plane -saddle -pivot -condyloid
Name the 8 types of bone injuries
-transverse -oblique -spiral -comminuated -avulsion -impacted -fissure -greenstick
Define and describe bursitis
-inflammation of the bursa (fluid filled sac surrounding the joint) -bursa can become inflamed from injury, infection, or due to an underlying rheumatic condition -identified by localized pain or swelling, tenderness, and pain with motion of the tissues in the affected area
