Skeletal system Flashcards
What are the functions of the skeleton
- Support
- Protection (e.g the ribcage protects the heart and lungs)
- Movement (muscles attached to the bone which contracxt to move the bones)
- Mineral storage ( Ca and P)
- Production of blood cells
Decscribe the structure of the bone.
- Joint: The place where two or more bones meet
- Cartilage: the layer of soft tissue between joints. It is softer than the bones and reduces friction when the bones meet.
- Spongy bone: Only occurs in long bones and is responsible for red blood cell production.
- Medullary cavity(marrow cavity):This contains yellow marrow, which produces white blood cells
- Compact bone(outer layer): This is white in appeareanc eand hard
What are the functions of connectivce tissue?
- Support
- Protection
- Store fat
- Form blood cells
- Bind structures
What is loose connnective tissue
Lose connective tissue surrounds the organs. It allows the organs to expand but also protects the organs
What is adipose tissue?
It is a loose connective type of tissue thart stores fat and insulates. It is found under the skin and around the kidneys
Wht are tendons?
Tendons are inelastic fibres of clloagen that connect bone to muscle.
What are ligaments?
Ligaments are connective tissue that consist of fibres of collagen and attach two bones to a joint. They are slightly elastic, allowing the bone to move, while limiting the range of the movements of the joints.
What is muscluar tissue?
Muscle accounts for 40% of a bodies weight. When musscles contract movemenet occurs e.g bones connected to them via tendons move.
Describe types of muscle
- Skeletal muscle: This is voluntary muscle found connected to bones, and between the ribs and in the diaphragm. Voluntary muslce is under conscious control. It’s main functions are movement and breathing
- Smooth Muscle: Ths is involuntary muscle found in the internal organs. Involantary muscle move independently. It’s main functions include peristalis and the dilation of the cervis during birth
- Cardiac muscle: Found the heart. Involuntary muscle tha does not fatigue. It’s function is to pump blood around the body
