Q

What are the functions of the skeleton

A
  • Support
  • Protection (e.g the ribcage protects the heart and lungs)
  • Movement (muscles attached to the bone which contracxt to move the bones)
  • Mineral storage ( Ca and P)
  • Production of blood cells

Q

Decscribe the structure of the bone.

A
  • Joint: The place where two or more bones meet
  • Cartilage: the layer of soft tissue between joints. It is softer than the bones and reduces friction when the bones meet.
  • Spongy bone: Only occurs in long bones and is responsible for red blood cell production.
  • Medullary cavity(marrow cavity):This contains yellow marrow, which produces white blood cells
  • Compact bone(outer layer): This is white in appeareanc eand hard

Q

What is loose connnective tissue

A

Lose connective tissue surrounds the organs. It allows the organs to expand but also protects the organs

Q

What are ligaments?

A

Ligaments are connective tissue that consist of fibres of collagen and attach two bones to a joint. They are slightly elastic, allowing the bone to move, while limiting the range of the movements of the joints.

Q

What is muscluar tissue?

A

Muscle accounts for 40% of a bodies weight. When musscles contract movemenet occurs e.g bones connected to them via tendons move.

Q

Describe types of muscle

A
  • Skeletal muscle: This is voluntary muscle found connected to bones, and between the ribs and in the diaphragm. Voluntary muslce is under conscious control. It’s main functions are movement and breathing
  • Smooth Muscle: Ths is involuntary muscle found in the internal organs. Involantary muscle move independently. It’s main functions include peristalis and the dilation of the cervis during birth
  • Cardiac muscle: Found the heart. Involuntary muscle tha does not fatigue. It’s function is to pump blood around the body
