Hyoid Bone

A

Bone superior to the larynx
Only bone in the body that does not articulate with another bone.
Anchors the tongue
Site attachement for muscles associated with swallowing.

16
Q

Define metaphysis

A

The neck protion of a long bone between the epiphysis and diaphysius. Contains the growth plate.

17
Q

Define medullary cavity

A

The central cavity of the bone shaft where the yellow marrow is stored.

18
Q

Define periosteum

A

The membrane that covers the outer surface of bones.

19
Q

Define endosteum

A

The membrane covering the internal wall of the medullary cavity

20
Q

What are the characteristics of compact bone?

A

Bone composed of repeating units of osteons.

21
Q

What are the primary functions of the skeletal system

A

-Support
-Protection
-Assistance in movement
-Mineral storage and release
-Blood cell production
-Fat storage

22
Q

How does the skeletal system provide support as a basic function?

A

The skeletal system provides a frame for the body. Providing muscle attachement.

Also supports other systems by storing and releasing nurtrients

23
Q

How does the skeletal system provide protection as a primary function?

A

Protects the internal organs from injury.

24
Q

How does the skeletal system provides Assistance in movement as a primary function?

A

Most skeletal muscles attach to bones, and when they contract, they pull on bones to produce movement.

25
How does the skeletal system provides **Mineral storage** as a primary function?
Stores Calcium phosphate in the bone and when blood calcium levels get low the bone breaks down releasing stored calcium phosphate.
26
How does the skeletal system provides **blood cell production** as a primary function?
In long bones there is red bone marrow. Red bone marrow produces red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets.
27
How does the skeletal system provides **lipid storage** as a primary function?
In long bones there is yellow bone marrow. Which consists mainly of adipose cells; which stores triglycerides as a potentail chemical energy reserve.
28
Define periosteum
Double layer membrane on the outer surface of bones. Composed of outer fiberous layer, and an inner osteogenic layer. ##footnote Contains nerve fibers, blood, lymphatic vessels. Outer fiberous layer: composed of dense regular connective tissue. Inner osteogenic layer: composed of osteoblast and osteoclasts.
29
What is the function of Osteoblast
Encases itself in a fiber matrix trapping minerals withing the matrix. ##footnote Once the osteoblast is encased within the matrix it becomes an osteocyte.
30
What is the main function of osteoclasts?
Breaking down bone matrix. To release stored calcium
