Skeletal system Flashcards
what are the functions of bones
support, protection, movement, storage, blood cell formation
types of bone tissue
compact- dense smooth and homogenous looking
spongy- full of tiny holes
bone shapes
long- a shaft with to ends, longer than wide
short- cube like
flat- flat
irregular- complex shape
simple fracture
bone doesn’t penetrate skin
treated by closed reduction where doctor realigns bones with hands
compound fracture
bone penetrates skin and is treated by open reduction where surgery is done on bones with pins and wires
bone formation
bone breaks down and are rebuilt due to calcium levels and the pull of gravity
calcium levels are controlled by the parathyroid gland that release parathyroid hormones
Diaphysis
shaft of the long bone that makes up the length of the bone
epiphysis
the ends of the bone
epiphyseal line
remnants of the epiphyseal plate (growth plate)
medullary cavity
stores yellow marrow
rickets
bowed legs, stunted growth, weird walking
low calcium and vitamin D intake
Milk
Osteoporosis
fragile and easy to break thin bones
door diet lacking protein, vitamin D and calcium
exercise and a good diet
