Skeletal System Flashcards
The skeleton provides the structural framework which supports the body, facilitates movement and maintains the anatomical shape.
one of the 5 functions
Support
This is an essential function, for without specific bones, such as the skull or ribs, then the internal structures would collapse. For example:
The skull protects the brain, the vertebrae protect the spinal cord, and the rib cage, sternum, and spine protect vital internal organs like the heart and lungs.
one of the 5 functions
Protection
The skeleton, when in conjunction with muscles, ligaments and tendons, allow for movement. The range of movement is determined by the type of joint and through the coordination of the nervous system.
one of the 5 functions
Movement
Importantly, blood cells are produced within the skeletal structure.
one of the 5 functions
Blood Cell Production
Bone tissues store several minerals, including Calcium and Phosphorus. When required, the bone will release the minerals into the blood, thus facilitating the balance of minerals in the body.
one of the 5 functions
Storage of Minerals/Mineral Homeostasis
very mobile, the end of one bone is shaped like a ball, the end of the other bone is shaped like a cup, the “ball” sits in the “cup” and is able to rotate. Examples include the hip joint and shoulder joint
moveable joint
Ball and Socket Joint
one bone moves like a door swinging on its hinges. Examples include the elbow joint and the knee joint
moveable joint
Hinge Joint
a bone rotates or “pivots” around another; we have pivot joints in our arms, and at the base of our skull
movable joint
Pivot Joint
bones “glide” past each other; we have them in our hands and feet
moveable joint
Gliding Joint
joints in the body that allow no movement (Skull)
immovable joint
Fixed Joint
