Skeletal System Flashcards
What are functions of the Skeletal System?
Support, Protection, Movement, Storage, Manufacturing.
How are bones classified?
By their shape
What are the anatomical features of a long bone?
Where are spongy bone and compact bone found?
Compact bone is found beneath periosteum, and at the ends of long bones the spongy bone layer is beneath compact bone.
How do spongy and compact bone different?
spongy bone contains large spaces while compact bone is made of compact osteons
What are the types of specialized bone cells?
Osteocytes, Osteoclasts, and Osteoblasts
What is the function of Osteocytes
mature bones cells that make up the majority of bone structure
What is the function of Osteoclasts
line the haversian canal and surfaces of compact and spongy bone
-breaks down bone
What is the function of Osteoblasts
line the haversian canal and surfaces of compact and spongy bone
-produces new bone
How is bone formed?
Bone is formed as cartilage calcifies
What is the composition of bones?
the osteoid portion of the bone provides flexibility while mineral salts give bones strength
How are bones remodeled
Hormones direct the constant of remodeling of bone
How is a broken bone repaired
hematoma forms followed by a callus to repair the fracture
What are the 2 major sections of the skeleton
Axial and appendicular
What bones are found within the axial skeleton
Skull, vertebral column, and ribs
