Feedback Loop - Vocab Flashcards
Processes in the body that monitor and regulate changes to maintain balance and homeostasis.
Feedback Mechanisms/Loops
The hierarchical arrangement of cells, tissues, organs, and systems in the body, working together to maintain proper functioning.
Levels of Organization
The body’s ability to maintain a stable internal environment despite external changes.
Homeostasis
A mechanism that counteracts changes to maintain balance and stability in the body.
Negative Feedback:
Receptors in the body that detect changes in the environment or internal conditions.
Sensors:
A mechanism that amplifies changes to achieve a specific outcome or
response in the body.
Positive Feedback:
The part of the body, usually the brain, that processes information from sensors and initiates a response.
Control Center:
Organs, tissues, or cells that carry out the response to counteract or amplify
changes in the body.
Effectors:
A hormone produced by the pancreas that helps cells absorb glucose from the bloodstream.
Insulin:
A hormone produced by the pancreas that triggers the release of glucose from
the liver into the bloodstream.
Glucagon:
Interruptions or abnormalities in the normal functioning of feedback mechanisms, which can lead to health issues.
Disruptions:
A chronic condition in which the pancreas does not produce enough
insulin, resulting in high levels of glucose in the bloodstream.
Type 1 Diabetes:
A signal or event that initiates a response in the body.
Stimulus:
Specialized cells or structures that detect and respond to stimuli.
Receptors:
The part of the body that processes information from receptors and
coordinates a response.
