List five types of bone and give an example each.

A
  1. Long bones - elongated, slender bones found mainly in the limbs.
  2. Short bones - chunky and boxy in shape. Ex, carpals and tarsals.
  3. Flat bones - curved and not flat, they are thin with parallel surfaces. Ex, ribs and sternum.
  4. Irregular bones - complex shapes with multiple processes and projections. Ex, vertebrae.
  5. Sesamoid bones - form within a tendon. Ex, patella.

Why are bone injury usually very painful?

A

The sensory nerve supply usually enters the bone at the same site as the nutrient artery, and branches extensively throughout the bone. Bone injury is therefore usually very painful.
