Skeletal System Flashcards
Understand the function and components
The skeletal system is composed of the
Bones, joints, and cartilages
The skeletal system has 2 components.
Axial and Appendicular
Axial skeleton parts
Skull, Rib cage, ossicles, and spine
Appendicular skeleton parts
Shoulder girdle, upper limbs, pelvic girdle, and lower limbs.
What does the endoskeleton do?
Allows the body to rise up above the ground or stand upright, and bears the our weight.
What mineral does the skeletal system store?
The skeletal system acts as a storehouse for calcium ions.
Function of cartilage
Protects your bones. It acts as a shock absorber and reduces friction between bone surfaces at the joints.
Function of joints
They help you sit and move.
Function of Tendons
Connects muscle to bone
Function of Ligaments
A tough band of connective tissues that connect bone to bone
What are fibrous joints?
Immovable and bones fused together, skull is an example.
What are cartilaginous joints?
These joints allow partial movement and occur where the connection between expressing bones is made of cartilage. Examples include the joints between the ribs and sternum.
What are synovial joints?
Allows wide range of movement, bones include shoulder, knee, or hip.
Functional Classification of Joints
Immovable, slightly immovable, and freely movable joints
