Kidney Function & Anatomy Flashcards
What are the functions of the kidney?
Filter blood, regulates pH, blood pressure, and waste removal.
What organ system does the kidney belong to?
Excretory System
How do the kidneys regulate the body’s water balance?
They adjust how much water is in urine.
How do kidneys maintain electrolyte balance?
They keep the right amount of substances in the body by reabsorbing or excreting them.
How is urine made?
Blood is filtered, and useful substances are reabsorbed while waste is turned into urine.
Why is glomerular filtration important?
It allows small molecules to pass into the urine.
How do kidneys eliminate waste?
By filtering it out of the blood and into urine.
What do renal tubules do?
They reabsorb useful substances and secrete waste
What factors affect kidney function?
Dehydration, certain medications, diseases.
What are nephrons?
Kidney structures responsible for urine formation.
How do kidneys affect blood pressure?
They control fluid volume and make a hormone called renin.
