Skeletal system Flashcards
what is the protection function of the skeltal system
Protection: the cranium and ribs protect the brain and the vital organs in the chest
what is the shape function of the skeltal system
shape: gives shape to the body and makes you tall or short
what is the support function of the skeletal system
support: hold your vital organs in place when playing sports. The vertebral column holds the body upright
what is the movement function of the skeletal system
muscles are attached to bones which are jointed. When muscles contract bones move
what is blood protections function in skeletal system
red blood cells carry oxygen and white blood cells protect against infections and are produced in bone marrow of some bones
How many bones are in an adult skelaton
206 in adult
babies have 350
why do babies shave more bones
babies have more bones because they need to be more flexible when they are in the womb and as they grow they get back 206
outer surface of bone
the outer surface of a bone is called the periosteum
second layer of bone
is made of up compact bones this part is smooth and very hard within compact bone there are many layers of spongy bone
spongy bone
protect the innermost part of the bone the bone marrow.
bone marrow
thick jelly and makes blood cells
3 parts of bone
ligament, tendon, certialge
ligament
elastic bands of tissue, hold bones together in joints
tendon
tissue that attaches a muscle to bones for example
cartilage
flexible connective tissue that protects your joints and bones
