Axial
Division of Skeleton containing the limbs (including girdles)
Appendicular
Division of Skeleton containing the Head
Cranial
Division of Skeleton containing the everything other than the head
Postcranial
Composition. that has cells, collagen fibers and ground substance
Organic
Composition made up of Hydroxyapetite
Inorganic
Dense type of bone
Compact / Cortical
Type of bone with projections called trabeculae
Spongy / Trabecular
Type of bone with joint surfaces
Articular / Subchondrial
Thick collar of compact bone, medullary cavity, yellow & red marrow
Disaphysis
End of bones, compact & articular bone encapsulating spongy, hematopoiesis
Epiphysis
Covers the outer surface, continuous with collagen in bone
Periosteum
Covers inner surface
Endosteum
Replaces periosteum where bones meet
Articular Cartilage
Shaft with two ends, primarily compact bone, limbs (except patella, carpals and tarsals)
Long bones
Cube like mostly spongy bone, capals and tarsals
Short bones
thin & flattened, usually curved, parallel layers of compact bone with spongy in between (called diploe in skull), sternum, ribs and skull
flat bones
mainly spongy with thin outer compact layer; vertebrae, skull (face) and hips
Irregular Bones
small / round, the patella
Sesamoid
