Neurocranium (Bones of the brain case) Flashcards
tight fitting joint between cranial bone
Sutures
midline articulation between two parietal bones
sagittal suture
articulation between frontal and parietal bones
coronal suture
articulation between the occipital bone from the parietal bones
lambodial suture
articulation between temporal and parietal bones
squamosal suture
obliterated by 7 or 8 years of age, approximately 6% of adults retain
metopic suture
Contains the supraorbital margin, supraorbital tori, labella, frontal sinus
frontal
rim of bone that outlines the upper margins of the orbit
Supraorbital margin
arch of bones above the orbits
supraorbital tori
the smooth generally hairless area between the supraorbital arch
Glabella
located posterior to the supraorbital tori, air-filled chambers allow for vocal resonance, opens into nasal cavity)
frontal sinus
contains the bregma, parietal eminence and meningeal grooves
parietal
intersection of coronal and sagittal sutures, landmark for measurement
bregma
lateral bulges, useful for sex estimation
parietal eminence
impressions of middle meningeal artery, useful for siding
meningeal grooves
Contains the external auditory meatus, the big 4 (zygomatic process, mandibular/glenoid fossa, mastoid process), squamous portion, petrous portion (middle ear with eardrum and ossicals, inner ear with hearing & equilibrium receptors)
temporal
located in the tymphanic cavity; malleus, incis, stapes, transmit sound waves from tymphanic membrane (ear drum) to oval window (membrane of the inner ear)
ear ossicles
Contains the external occipital protuberance, nuchal lines, occipital condyles, foramen magnum
occipital
prominent bump on the back of skull
external occipital protuberance
sites of neck muscle attachments
nuchal lines
articulation between the cranium and first cervical vertebra
occipital condyles
where spinal cord meets the brain
foramen magnum
additional bones that can occur within sutures, most common among lambodial suture
sutral / intrasutural
large irregular shaped bone that connects the neurocranium and splanchnocranium, several foramina allow for the passage of nerves from the brain to rest of the skull/body. Features; sella turica, great wing, lesser wing, superior orbital fissure, foramen ovale, foramen rotundrum, optical canal
sphenoid
irregularly shaped bone that also helps connect the neurocranium and splanchnocranium, allows passage of olfactory nerves from brain to nose, contains sinuses that aid in warming income air. Feautures; crista galli, perpendicular plate, middle nasal concha, superior nasal concha
ethmoid
