Skeletal System Flashcards
Provides framework in our body, protects our internal organ, and also produce blood cells
Bones
number of bones in our body
206
soft part of the bone, located at the end of long bone, contain red blood cells
spongy bone
made of collagen, it is a hard bone
compact bone
bone covered in two layers
periosteum and endosteum
outer layer of the bone
periosteum
inner layer of the bone
endosteum
composed of organic and inorganic substances of the bone, non living part of the bone
bone matrix
runs through our yellow bone marrow
blood vessels
carries deoxygenated blood in our body
veins
carries oxygenated blood in our body
arteries
end part of the bone or distal end of the bone, upper end part of lower end part
epiphysis
the middle part of the bone
diaphysis
2 subdivision of skeletal system
axial skeleton and appendicular skeleton
are the bone that can be found in the middle part of our body, they belongs to the long axis of our body
axial skeleton
these are the bones located in the distal part or lateral part of the body, upper and lower extremities, it is our arms, hands, and legs
appendicular skeleton
protects and covered the brain from the outside, it is the hard membrane or the external, made up of 28 bones
skull
where we can see the frontal lobe, anterior or front part of the skull
contains the frontal sinuses, forms the upper part of the Orbis, forms the coronal suture with the two parietal bones
frontal bone
posterior part of the skull, where usually the vertebral column attached
occipital bone
flat bone, top part of the skull, form the bulging top of the cranium, forms several suture
parietal bone
skull bone close to the ears, located at the lateral part of the skull, forms the lower sides of the cranium and part of the cranial floor, contains the inner and middle ears
temporal bone
separate the frontal and parietal bone
coronal suture
found between the frontal and temporal bones. A bat-shaped boned located central portion of the cranial floor. contains the sphenoid sinuses
sphenoid bone
can be found inside the eye orbit, a complicated irregular bone that lies anterior to the sphenoid and posterior nasal bone.
ethmoid bone
upper jaw, supports the upper teeth and use for mastification. Forms part of the orbital floors, roof of the mouth, and floor and sidewalls of the nose, contains maxillary sinuses
maxilla
largest, strongest of the bone of the face, forms the only movable joint of the skull with the temporal bone
mandible
shape the cheeks and forms the outer margin of the orbit
zygomatic bone
both nasal bones form the upper part of the bridge of the nose, cartilage forms the lower part
nasal bone
paper-thin bone that lies just posterior and lateral to each nasal bone. Forms the nasal cavity and medial wall of the orbit, support and houses the lacrimal gland, lacrimal gland release fluid or what we call tears
lacrimal bone
two-bones form the posterior part of the hard palate, vertical portions forms the lateral wall of the posterior part of each nasal cavity
palatine bone
form the lower edge projecting into the nasal cavity and form the nasal meatus
inferior nasal conchae (turninates)
form the posterior portion of the nasal septum
vomer bone
U-shaped bone lacated, it is the only U-shape bone and only bone that articulates with no other bones, lies on top of larynx
Hyoid Bone
bones that support and made up the spinal cord, divided into 5 part, forms the flexible longitudinal axis of the skeleton, consists of 24 vertebrae plus the sacrum and coccyx
vertebral column
5 major part of the spinal column or spinal cord
cervical, thoracic, lumbar, sacrum, and coccyx
U-shaped bone located, it is the only U-shape bone and only bone that articulates with no other bones, lies on top of larynx
Hyoid Bone
protects the cervical spinal nerve
cervical spinal column
cover the lungs
ribs
dagger-shaped bone in the middle of the anterior chest wall made up of
Manubrium, Body, Xiphoid, where the ribs are connected at
sternum
the head part of the sternum, where the first rib is connected
manumbrium
the biggest part of the sternum where the ribs are directly connected
body
end part of the sternum
xiphoid process
number of ribs
12 pairs of ribs , 24 in total
first 7 ribs are called, because they are connected in our sternum
true ribs
8-12 ribs are not directly connected in our sternum they are called
false ribs
11-12 ribs are not fused together, they are called
floating ribs
spaces between our ribs are called, where the intercostal muscle is located,
intercostal spaces
consists of the bones of the shoulder girdle, upper arm, lower arm, wrist, and hand
upper extremity
longest bone of upper extremity
humerus
bones that align in our thumbs it is a thicker bone of our lower arm is called
radius
bones that align in our pinky, it is a thin bone of our lower arm is called
ulna
combine clavicle and scapula
shoulder girlde
joint that combine the scapula and clavicle
sternoclavicular joint
eight small bones that form the wrist
carpal bones
bones that forms the framework of our hands
metacarpals
consists of the bones of the hip, thigh, lower leg, ankle, and foot
lower extremities
made up of the sacrum and the two coxal bones bound tightly by strong ligaments, passageway of the baby during delivery
pelvic girdle
each coxal bone is made up of
three bones
3 coxal bone
ilium - largest
ischium- strongest, lowermost
pubis - anteriormost
