Skeletal System Flashcards
Consists of all of the ,BONES, CARTILAGE, TENDONS, and LIGAMENTS in the body
SKELETAL SYSTEM
How many bones in adults skeleton
206 bones
Forms the central axis of the human body and includes the bones of the skull, the ossicles of the middle ear, the hyoid bone of the throat, the vertebral column, and the thoracic cage (ribcage)
AXIAL SKELETON
What is the function of the axial skeleton?
To provide support and protection for the brain, spinal cord, and organs in the ventral body cavity
Provides a surface for the attatchment of muscle that move the head, neck, and trunk; performs respiratory movements; and stabilizes parts of the appendicular skeleton.
AXIAL SKELETON
How many bones in axial skeleton?
80 bones in total
Is formed by the pectoral girdles, the upper limbs, the pelvic girdle of pelvis, and the lower limbs
Appendicular skeleton
How many bones in appendicular skeleton?
126 bones
What is the function of appendicular skeleton
To make locomotion possible and to protect the major organs of digestion, excretion and reproduction
Is a rigid organ that constitues part of the vertebrate skeleton in animals. It PROTECTS THE VARIOUS ORGANS OF THE BODY. Produce RED and WHITE blood cells, STORE MINERALS, PROVIDE STRUCTURE AND SUPPORT FOR THE BODY, and enable mobility
Bone
Is a resilient and smooth elastic tissue, a rubber-like padding that covers and protects the ends of long bones at the joints and nerves.
And is a structural component of the rib cage, the ear, the nose, the broncial tubes, the intervertebral discs, and many other body components
Cartilage
Is the body system composed of bones and cartilage.
Composed of around 270 bones at birth- this total decreases to around 206 bones by adulthood after some bones get fused together
Skeletal system
What is the function of the skeletal system
Supports the body Facilitates movement Protects internal organ Produces blood cells Stores anf releases minerals and fat
What are the types of bones
Long bone
Short bone
Flat bone
Irregular bone
What are the types of bones
Long bone (humerous of arm) Short bone (carpal of wrist) Flat bone (sternum) Irregular bond (vertebra)
