Skeletal System Flashcards
amphiarthrosis
a slightly movable articulation
epiphysis
the end part of a long bone, initially growing separately from the shaft.
medullary canal
the marrow cavity of a bone.
scoliosis
abnormal lateral curvature of the spine.
appendicular skeleton
one of two major bone groups in the body, the other being the axial skeleton. The appendicular skeleton is comprised of the upper and lower extremities, which include the shoulder girdle and pelvis.
femur
the bone of the thigh or upper hind limb, articulating at the hip and the knee.
metacarpals
any of the five bones of the hand.
sinuses
a cavity within a bone or other tissue, especially one in the bones of the face or skull connecting with the nasal cavities.
axial skeleton
the braincase (cranium) and the backbone and ribs, and it serves primarily to protect the central nervous system.
fibula
the outer and usually smaller of the two bones between the knee and the ankle in humans
metatarsals
any of the bones of the foot
sprain
wrench or twist the ligaments of (an ankle, wrist, or other joint) violently so as to cause pain and swelling but not dislocation.
arthritis
painful inflammation and stiffness of the joints.
fontanels
space between the bones of the skull in an infant or fetus, where ossification is not complete and the sutures not fully formed. The main one is between the frontal and parietal bones.
sternum
the breastbone.
carpals
bones of the wrist that connect the distal aspects of the radial and ulnar bones of the forearm
foramina
an opening, hole, or passage, especially in a bone.
osteoporosis
a medical condition in which the bones become brittle and fragile from loss of tissue, typically as a result of hormonal changes, or deficiency of calcium or vitamin D.
sutures
. A type of joint between the bones of the skull where the bones are held tightly together by fibrous tissue.
clavicles
technical term for collarbone.
humerus
the bone of the upper arm or forelimb, forming joints at the shoulder and the elbow.
patella
the kneecap.
synarthrosis
an immovably fixed joint between bones connected by fibrous tissue (for example, the sutures of the skull).
cranium
the skull, especially the part enclosing the brain
