Skeletal system Flashcards
what is the skeletal system
The support and movement of the body is facilitated by the structure and function of the bones and joints in the skeletal system
what does the skeletal system consist of
bones, ligaments and joints
what two parts are in the skeletal system
axial, apendicular
how many bones in axial is there
80 bones
how many bones are there in apendicular
126 bones
functions of the skeletal system
support, movement, protection, storage, production
support in skeletal system
gives shape, supports parts, point of attachment for muscles
movement in skeletal system
muscles move bones, they move based on location to other bones
articulation
the position of bones determines the range of movement
protection in skeletal system
protects vital organs
storage in skeletal systems
bones store minerals, salts and fats
blood cell production in skeletal system
red marrow in some bones make red blood cells
axial
runs along the body’s axis or centre
- supports for upright posture
- protects CNS and vital organs
- bones include skull, sternum, ribs, vertebra, sacrum and coccyx
apendicular
comes out of the body’s centre, includes 4 appendages plus shoulder and pelvic girdle it allows for the movement of limbs from axial skeleton
types of bones
long, short, flat, irregular, sesamoid
