23
Q

What is the axial skeleton

A

Bones along the midline of the body: cranium, vertebral column, ribs and sternum

24
Q

What is the appendicular skeleton

A

outer limbs

25
Q

3 functions of a flat bone

A
  • protective
    -muscle attachments
  • source of red bone marrow
26
Q

function of short bones

A
  • strength
  • limited movement
27
Q

functions of long bones

A
  • strength
  • structure
  • stability
28
Q

What is the function of a sesamoid bone?

A

to protect tendons from compressive forces and reinforce them

29
Q

what are the three types of joint?

A
  • fibrous
  • cartilaginous
  • synovial
30
Q

what is a fibrous joint?

A

where two bones are bound by dense fibrous tissues rich in collagen fibres forming a strong joint with NO MOVEMENT

31
Q

What is a primary cartilaginous joint?

A

(LIMITED MOVEMENT)
Where two ends of bone are connected together by hyaline cartilage

32
Q

What is a secondary cartilaginous joint?

A

( LIMITED MOVEMENT)
end of two bones still connected to hyaline cartilage, however the hyaline cartilage is separated by fibrocartilage.

33
Q

What is a synovial joint?

A
  • ends of bones are covered with articular cartilage to prevent damage to the underlining bone.
  • synovial joint cavity contains synovial fluid which is secreted by the synovial membrane
  • enclosed in an elastic joint capsule
  • FREE MOVEMENT
34
Q

What is a bursa?

A

A synovial fluid filled sac, which acts as a cushion between skin/tendons and other joint structures such as bones, reducing friction.
