Anatomical position
standing upright, palms facing forward, feet shoulder-width apart
Superior
higher on the body, closer to the head
Inferior
lower on the body, farther from the head
Anterior
front (in front of …)
Posterior
back (behind …)
Proximal (only use proximal and distal when describing two points on the same limb i.e. arm or leg)
closer to the point of attachment
Distal (only use proximal and distal when describing two points on the same limb i.e. arm or leg)
further away from the point of attachment
Medial
towards the midline of the body
Lateral
away from the midline of the body
Sagittal plane
divides the body into left and right
mid-sagittal plane
divides the body equally into left and right (goes through the midline)
para-sagittal plane
divides the body unequally to left and right
transverse plane
divides the body horizontally into superior and inferior parts
Oblique plane
divides the body at (any) angle
Contralateral
on the opposite side of the body from another structure (left arm and right arm)
