Skeletal muscles Flashcards
supraspinatus
a rotator cuff, abduction of shoulder
psoas(major and minor)
hip flexor, pull femur towards trunk; stabilises pelvis
latissimus dorsi
wide back muscle, extends, adducts, medially rotates
quadratus lumborum
lower spine support, lateral flexion, vertebral extension
erector spinae
keeps spine upright
masseter
cheek; mastication
temporalis
horizontal temple area, mastication
sternocleidomastum
head to neck; rotation and tilting of head
trapezius
shoulder muscle; head back, retract shoulders
occipitus frontalis
muscle at back of head; raises eyebrows
orbicularis oculi
round eyes, blink
orbicularis ori
round mouth, pout or close mouth
acromion
shoulder ‘cap’
scapula
shoulder blade, retraction
aponeurosis
fibrous bankd or sheet of tendon (e.g. next to lat dorsi and over QL)
pectoralis major
major chest muscle, draw arms forward; shoulder flexion/adduction, medial rotation
rectus abdominus
core, six pack; parallel to midline; vertebral flexion (‘crunch’); increases IAP
transversus abdominus
compresses abdominal organs, increases IAP
internal / external obliques
rotation, bending sideways
diaphragm(attach to sternum, lower 6 rib pairs and lumbar spine)
contracts to lower, increasing space for air to enter lungs
deltoid
attaches from scapula and clavicle to humerus; flexion, abduction, extension of shoulder joint
biceps brachii
two heads, scapula to radius; flexion of lower arm and supination; stabilises shoulder
triceps brachii
three heads; extension of lower arm, arm adduction
flexor carpi ulnaris
flexes hand at the wrist
extensor carpi ulnaris
extends hand at the wrist
gluteus maximus
lgst muscle in the posterior chain; ilius to femur;extension of the hip joint, external rotation, abduction
gluteus medius
abducts leg, stabilises pelvis
hamstrings (biceps femoris, semi-membranosus, semi-tendinosus)
bend knee
rectus femoris
deepest quad muscle, flexes hip; extends knee,
thigh adductors
squeeze thighs together
tibialis anterior
dorsiflexion and inversion
soleus
the lower/underneath one (sole!), plantar flexion; ankle stability
gastrocnemius
belly of the calf, flexes at the knee, plantar flexion; splits in to two
