skeletal muscle Flashcards
all 3 muscle cells possess what 4 characteristics?
irritability, contractility, extensibility, elasticity
what type of cells do all muscles have?
elongated- skeletal are the longest
what are the 3 functions of muscles?
movement
stabilization
thermogenesis
where are skeletal muscles located?
somatic/skeletal, upper esophagus, diaphragm
describe the cells of skeletal muscles
multinucleated and long- fusion of numerous myoblasts
what is the epimysium composed of?
dense connective tissue
what surrounds a skeletal muscle?
epimysium
the skeletal muscle is made up of bundles of?
muscle cells (fascicles) each covered by perimysium
the perimysium is made up of?
dense connective tissue
what is a fascicle made of?
numerous muscle cells/ fibers each covered by endomysium
what does the endomysium consist of?
basal lamina
where do the epimysium, perimysium and endomysium become continuous with the muscle tendon?
myotendinous junction- attaches muscle to bone
what is the sarcolemma?
cell membrane of a muscle fiber
what is a transverse tubule?
it is continuous with the sarcolemma, extending into the interior of the fiber, surrounding the myofibrils
what is the sarcoplasmic reticulum and what does it form?
specialized endoplasmic reticulum, forms a tubular network around the myofibrils
