skeletal muscle Flashcards
1
Q
organisation of skeletal muscle - largest to smallest
A
muscle, muscle fascicle, muscle fibre, myofibril, sarcomere, myofilament.
2
Q
What are the three connective tissue sheaths in skeletal muscle, and what do they cover?
A
- Endomysium: surrounds each muscle fibre
- Perimysium: surrounds each fascicle
- Epimysium: covers the whole muscle.
3
Q
what is the functional unit of muscle
A
The functional unit of muscle is a ‘motor unit’
4
Q
what are the 3 types of muscle contraction
A
- Concentric: shortening
- Eccentric: lengthens
- Isometric: does not change
5
Q
what are the 4 roles that muscles can play during movement?
A
- Agonist (Prime Mover): Main muscle driving movement (e.g., elbow flexor).
- Antagonist: Opposes movement, lengthens to allow motion (e.g., elbow extensor).
- Synergist: Assists prime mover or stabilizes related joints (e.g., shoulder & elbow).
- Fixator: Stabilizes one body part while another moves.
