skeletal muscle Flashcards
active hyperemia:
when a tissue becomes highly active (i.e. exercising muscle), the rate of blood flow to the tissue increases
increased metabolism –increased vasodilator release – causes cells to devour tissue fluid nutrients
vasodilation increases local blood flow
reactive hyperemia:
transient increase in organ blood flow following a period of ischemia
process of hyperemia:
during the occulsion, vasodilator metabolites (adenosine) build up. once the occlusion is removed, they flood the vessels and open them up. the longer the occlusion, the more vasodilator build up.
what is the myogenic response
intrinsic tendency of vascular smooth muscle to contract in response to increased distending pressure and relax in response to decreased distending pressure
protective measure - prevents excessive stretching during periods of high BP
