Skeletal Bioscience Flashcards
What does the skeletal system support?
Forms framework of body
What does the skeletal system protect?
Brain, spinal cord, heart and lungs
What type of blood cell’s does the skeletal system produce?
RBC’s, WBC’s and platelets in red bone marrow within the epiphysis
Where is fat stored in the skeletal system?
In yellow bone marrow within the epiphysis
What is an example of a long bone
Humerous
What is an example of a short bone
Talus
What is an example of a flat bone
Sternum
What is an example of an irregular bone
Vertebrae
Describe osteogenic cells
They form osteoblasts
Describe osteoblasts
Young bone cells that form new bone e.g: in growth. Found in the periosteum and endosteum
Describe osteocytes
Are mature bone cells found in the lacunae surrounded by matrix
Describe osteoclasts
Destroy bone matrix using lysosomes & are involved in bone remodelling, found in the periosteum & endosteum.
What is the diaphysis mostly made up of?
Compact bone
What type of bone has a honeycomb structure
Spongy bone
Organic materials in bones give:
Flexibility & strength
Inorganic materials in bones give:
Gives hardness, and becomes brittle
The process of bone tissue formation is called?
Ossification
Bone remodelling consists of both:
bone deposits & bone reabsorption
Remodelling involves the activity of osteoblasts & osteoclasts
What is the function of the parathyroid hormone?
Released in response to low blood calcium levels
What is the function of calcitonin?
Released in response to high blood calcium levels
What is the mechanical response to stress on bones
Bones are stressed when weight bears or muscle pulls on them.
Describe the four stages of fracture repair
- Blood clotting
- collagen & condronblasts
- calcification & osteoblasts form bone callus
- osteoclasts assist remodelling
