skeletal Flashcards
Long bones
length > width
Short bones:
length about = width
Flat bones:
flat & thin +/- curve
Irregular bones:
complex, don’t fit other categories
all bones
ALL BONES ARE COMPOSED OF COMPACT AND SPONGY BONE
Short, Irregular, & Flat Bones
Compact surface
Spongy core
(flat = diploë) – red marrow site
have compact surface, spongy core & medullary cavity
Long bones
Epiphyses – (Long bone)
at ends of bone with articular hyaline cartilage
Diaphysis (Long bone)
= shaft, contains medullary cavity & marrow
Marrow (Diaphysis)(long bones)
in medullary cavity)
Child - red bone marrow
Adult – yellow bone marrow
Metaphysis-(long bones)
at junction of diaphysis & epiphysis
Epiphyseal plate and Epiphyseal line – mature bone
Marrow
found in medullary cavities & within spongy bone
Red marrow
is site of hemopoiesis, found in all spongy bone
Yellow marrow
is site of lipid storage
Not present in children
Present in adult medullary
Spongy (cancellous) bone –
internal to compact
Parallel lamellae w/ osteocytes but no central canal or osteons
Trabeculae (dividers) are stress resistant jungle gym with marrow between trabecular spicules
