Skelelal System Flashcards
What are the skeletal system functions?
Support (primary function), Movement (passive), Protectoion of Vital Organs, Mineral Storage, Blood cell formation (Hemopoiesis)
Describe a compact dense bone.
Hard and heavy. Forms surface and diaphysis. Osteons are building blocks.
Describe Cancellous spongy bone
Lightweight, fills epiphyses, contains red marrow. Trabeculae are building blocks.
What is Matrix?
Mineral Salts (hardness) Collagen (strong and flexible)
What are the three bone cells
Osteoblasts, Osteocyte, and Osteoclasts
What is Osteoblast
BUILD. Secrete to build bone.
What is Osteocytes?
Mature bone cells. Trapped osteoblasts.
What are Osteoclasts?
CRASH. Destroys bone (old bone) Enzymes digest protein, acids dissolve minerals, forms marrow cavity, involved in remodeling
What are the skeletal divisions?
Axial and Appendicular
What is Axial?
skull, vetebra, ribs, sternum
What is Appendicular?
upper, lower limbs, arms and legs
What is an example of long bone?
humerus, femur
What is an example of short bone?
carpal, tarsal
Example of short bone?
Sternum
Example of irregular bone?
vertebra
Sesamoid bone
knee
Sutural between cranial bones
glenoid suture
What is in a long bone anatomy?
Diaphysis, Epiphyses, Articular cartilage, Epiphyeal line, Periosteum, Nurtient Foramina, Medullary cavity, Endosteum
What is Diaphysis?
shaft made of compact bone
What is Epiphyses?
ends filled with spongy bone containing red marrow
What is Articular cartliage?
It covers epiphyses
What is an Epiphyseal line?
It indicates earlier location of epiphyseal growth plate.
What is Periosteum?
is connective tissue covering bone/
What is Nutrient Foramina?
holes allowing for penetration of arteries
